Recommended Value Intended Education Structure
| Brig. (Dr) Sunil Kumar Moudgil (Retd) - 17 May 2019

Universities as institutions provide the basis of knowledge creation and are considered the place where good citizens are trained for the task of Nation building. Traditionally the Universities are supposed to be protected and insulated from government and political interference. The leadership of these universities is expected to function as hard task masters with extensive knowledge in the field of their expertise and command respect in the society. This classical concept/model in the recent past has faced unprecedented and great challenges as one can observe in the context of Indian Universities.
The falling standards and atmosphere in higher education is no exception. Cases in point could be - the closures of universities due to unrest by its stake holders, the allegations of corruption & favouritism, cheating by students in examinations, teacher’s absenteeism etc. Something which was never heard of is now a bit of routine at one place or the other. All these symptoms could be different and very many, but the root cause seems to be only one – degradation in societal values at large.
Somehow, we as good citizens of this great country, having history of high standards of moral values, have not kept the pace and control over the fast-changing values in so called modern society. The result of which, is that personal, family, community, work/corporate and national values have taken a very bad hit.
Major push is only given to acquire knowledge and more knowledge. Most management & technology institutes spent their complete effort in preparing students to be employable, eligible to grab a job after finishing their studies. ‘Skilling India’ effort though bridging gap between knowledge & skills but does not lead students to be a good human being/citizen. Curriculum followed in our education system superficially lay importance to value education. A country build without strong values is akin to building a nation without foundation. There is no point keep singing history and feeling happy about our past. We live in present and not in past.
Relentless need of the hour is to have a dynamic education curriculum which meets modernisation & commercialisation of the digital age and synch with ever changing values in the society. To implement such a curriculum, we need ‘Teachers of Creativity & Innovations’ at a school level, Professors in Colleges, ‘Departments of Creativity & Innovation’ in every sphere of education and finally we must create couple of ‘Universities of Creativity and Innovations’ in higher education. This will help design & implement education at all levels, more holistically. The purpose of ‘skilling India’ will reap larger benefits for mankind, when knowledge, skills and life values are assorted to create present & future generation of citizens.
