Safe Learning Environments and Classroom Management Strategies
| Natia Bolghashvili - 16 Dec 2024

A safe learning environment is the basic element that, first of all, the school must satisfy in order to be able to fully fulfill its cognitive purpose. According to Boucher and Manning, a safe school is a place where students, teachers, and administration maintain a positive sense of safety, and the school is free from bullying or threats.
A safe school implies both physical and emotional safety, that is, there should be an orderly infrastructure, healthy food, violence, physical abuse, entry of strangers into the territory should be eliminated, measures regarding the health of students should be developed in advance. This is about physical safety, but if I were asked what my safe learning environment is, I would focus more on emotional safety. Providing emotional safety means that students can freely express their opinions, not be afraid to make mistakes, not have anyone push their point of view, avoid bullying, threats and verbal abuse, should be a caring, stimulating environment for students. In short, safe for me A learning environment where students can be who they really are, with opportunities for progress and physical safety.
For students to succeed and for school to play its role in their lives, academic preparation alone is not enough.
In order for children to think about development, they must first have elementary conditions, and this is well explained by Maslow’s theory, according to which people’s needs are arranged hierarchically, first are physiological needs, and then safety, that is, safety is one of the basic needs for a person, and if this is not met, he cannot switch. to higher-level demands, such as self-actualization. Therefore, for a school to achieve its goals and for students to think about both personal and academic development, it must first create a safe learning environment where teachers and children are not constantly expected to be physically and emotionally harmed, but They will be focused on progress.
Along with compliance with safety norms, it is important for the teacher to manage the class effectively. Class management means conducting lessons smoothly, maintaining discipline. A successful teacher has pre-developed instructional strategies and plans.
Three strategies of class management are distinguished: the authoritative approach is characterized by control, strict rules and punishment, students can express their opinion freely, the rules are made unilaterally by the teacher, the teaching process is focused on the whole class and not on one individual, the motivation of students is external.
During the chaotic style, there are no established rules, the goals are unlimited, the teacher has a friendly attitude with the children, but the level of control is very low.
During the democratic style, the teacher and the students cooperate, together they establish the rules of behavior, everything is limited for the students and the level of control is also normal, the teacher frequently praises the students, the desired behavior is formed through reinforcement, I prefer this style of classroom management, everything is balanced here, the students feel important as people, because they are involved in the process of solving all the issues. With such an approach, the child’s school will not be an object, but a place where he is looked upon as an equal person.
